Platform was invited to participate in the StabilityMobility seminar in Rotterdam. Together with Leif Skoog from Gallery 54 in Gothenburg, Ulrika Ferm held a workshop on Art in the Periphery.

Galleri Huuto from Helsinki was the third guest Platform invited in spring 2004 on the theme Citymind. Galleri Huuto was founded in November 2002 from a strong urge to create a new independent and non-commercial exhibition space. Huuto was founded by 24 young artists as a one-year project, but continued after this and has today considered one of the most interesting exhibition spaces in Helsinki. The founding members of Huuto had in common an interest to gather different kinds of artists without forcing any artistic manifest. For the Huuto-members it was natural to offer the all members the possibility to participate in the Platform exhibition. They chose to use a democratic and multi purposed technique – the dia-positive. All artists handle dia_positives in different situations in their work. Everybody has them. Some of the artists had concentrated on the Citymind theme and prepared their pictures especially for the exhibition, but there was also pictures from private archives or found pictures. In the exhibition space they built an installation of several projectors and over 400 pictures that was projected on different surfaces that simultaneously divided the room. The installation can be seen as mirroring a cityscape where the visitor move between the sounds and pictures that are constantly changing. The sounds was mixed with the clicking of the projector and together with the pictures formed a kind of “citymind”.
At the opening night the Helsinki based Pink Twins played at the market square in Vaasa.

The initial idea of curating a show about Finnish manliness resulted in two solo shows titled Passion.
Jörgen Erkius (SWE) Opening 16.4.2004
Lives and works in Berlin, Germany. Erkius’ work is based on a performance-like process. Often taking the form of a kind of circuit – it starts, goes on and ends, returning to a similar path as it began from. This process is documented. Sometimes the result is photos, sometimes video. The objects he uses are gone – something has changed, there is a trace of the happening left. In MAMA Jörgen engaged a motorcycle-stuntman to perform for the opening. The exhibition consisted of the trace he had left and a documenting photograph.
Jouni Partanen (FIN) Opening 30.4.2004
Lives and works in Lahti, Finland. Partanen often works spontaneously within or with a given social context. He is a performance artist, often within collaborations, but works also with drawings and objects. He uses himself as an object and as a frame of reference. This is a process where a series of performances, previously made objects, drawings and sometimes personal belongings leads to an installation. At the opening Jouni gave away or burnt all belongings, clothes and money he had brought with him, leaving himself naked and scraped bare in the street. Uncertain how the performance will end.

Jasper Budel & Marcus Lerviks
Friction is an exhibition with works by Jasper Budel (NL) and Markus Lerviks (FI). The works of Budel and Lerviks are manipulative and deceptive. They create an inner anxiety by blending contradictory feelings; fear and compassion, sadness and irony. The exhibition consists of installations and videos that maliciously confront the spectator and therefore have the exceptional ability to »get under skin». The exhibition materialises a »field of friction» transforming the space into a mental map or itinerary in which the works are reciprocal to each other as well as to the visitor.
Budel’s installation »Too sad to cry», consists of 470 large silkscreen-printed paper bags, and a video installation. Its size is Leviathan and will yield the spectator to superior numbers. Yet the self-portraits on the bags and in the video are vulnerable, pitiful and defy cruelty in the same time.
Lerviks shows three different works, two older video installations (»Easy pressure», »No Title») along with a new piece, »Keep it clean». The installation consists of two monitors placed on a wall next to each other. The image in the first monitor is of an ice-hockey goalkeeper trying to manage his given task. In the other monitor there are short sequences of a food-struggle within the bird kingdom. The installation deals with two extremes of control, the human in contrast to animal nature.
Friction is the second collaboration between artists-run spaces Platform (Vaasa) and MORGEN (Rotterdam). In 2002 MORGEN participated with four artists in the performance festival MOPE02.
