[Berlin Brigade Wall Watchers] Winter in Berlin
Hello WallWatchers, now the Winter really has hit Berlin.
At night we had temperatures below 0 F. ( minus 20C ) Be lucky that
you have not to practice there now! Snow we have got not that much,
maybe 3-4 , but the Grunewald looks like miracle-fairy tale-wonderland
wood now. All lakes, also the big Wannsee is frozen, this really
happens not very often. A nice adventure was the ride with an old 'ice
breaker' steamer on the Wannsee.
Re: [Berlin Brigade Wall Watchers] Winter in Berlin
I spent so many freezing days in thos woods I got cold
looking at them again. Thanks for bringing back some memories.
Re: Winter in Berlin
Really loved those pictures. It's been a long time since I used to skate over
the frozen Wannsee. Brought back a lot of good memories of growing up in Berlin.
Re: Winter in Berlin
Brrrr, I remember having to go down to the motorpool while on CQ and
start all the guns, and tracks, plus the diesel trucks. 8 guns, 8 ammo
carries, FDC's 577 and don't remember how many trucks. Our barracks
where on the oppisite end of McNair from the motorpool, you couldn't
get any further apart and stay on McNair. Ahh the good old days, sure
do miss them.
Re: Winter in Berlin
Grüß Gott, lieber Reinhard, & vergelt's Gott für die wunderschönen neuen Bilder
von Berlin im Winter! I was especially happy to see my old ACC (American
Community Chapel) on the Hüttenweg. My old chaplain assistant from 1974-76, then
a PFC, Is now a full-bird colonel in the Air Force, serving at our Embassy in
Afghanistan. I forwarded your pictures to him, knowing they will bring back
wonderful memories, thanks to you!
Re: Winter in Berlin
Now you gave it all away. Learned your German in Bavaria!
Then you use it with someone in Prussia. Many
Berliners would see that as an insult. You know
being from Prussia versus Bavaria. I find it
just hilarious. The frozen Wannsee is a
special treat for me, because I used to sail and row there. I
remember once when it was frozen, it was fun to walk and skate on
it. Can't remember when that was, but it does not happen that
often. Loved the picture of the Grunewald pigs.
Re: Winter in Berlin
Thanks once more. It remines, me back in the winter
of 1981 a bunch of us GI's were leaving the Jazzkeller and it had
snowed. Some young Germans were having a snowball fight among
themselves. Of course we got involved and it turned into a German
against Ami's. I lost my highschool class ring. My hands got cold,
fingers shrunk and the ring went with a snowball.
Re: Winter in Berlin
Everyone should have a snowball story from Berlin. Mine happened
outside the back gate waiting for the 53 bus with the 3/6 4-Deuce crew
on a Saturday afternoon (John Nickles, John Connell, Jesse Bonilla and
Kenny ????. A bunch of kids were playing in the schoolyard back there,
and of course we were "invited" to join in with a snowball. It was
going pretty well until the bus showed up. As we were boarding and
paying our fares, one of the kids got the bus driver with a snowball.
He wasn't happy, to say the least! We all got a good laugh out of that
one. Your pictures make me want to come back for a visit in the winter.
The snow here in Colorado just doesn't make good snowballs! And we're
down to one good German restaurant here now, although there is a pretty
good feinbackerei in town.
